Windstar Cruises is rewriting the script on Mediterranean vacations with its "Local Season" itineraries, running November through March. For travelers willing to swap peak-season crowds for a more intimate experience, the rewards are plentiful.

The appeal starts with the weather. Europe's southern coastlines are famously mild in fall and winter, with cities like Málaga, Rome and Athens hovering around the 70s. Airfare is cheaper too, leaving more budget for unique experiences, seasonal souvenirs and local dining.

Winter also means Europe at its most festive. Many of the continent's legendary holiday markets kick off as early as the first week of November, and distinct celebrations like Venice's Carnevale and Greece's Epiphany — a January festival of lights — give each destination its own character. Windstar's small-ship format means more personal interactions with locals and more breathing room at must-see attractions.

The itineraries themselves open up ports unavailable in summer, including Naples, Catania and Genoa, along with overnight stays in cities like Venice and Livorno, the gateway to Florence and Pisa.

That said, low-season cruising does call for a degree of flexibility. Shore excursions occasionally get canceled when not enough passengers sign up, so it's worth checking in with the excursion team about backup options. Some shops and restaurants — particularly in smaller villages — close during winter months, though larger cities like Palma de Mallorca, Málaga and Barcelona offer plenty of museums, boutiques and restaurants year-round.

Solo travelers should keep an eye out for single-supplement discounts, which are often available on winter itineraries and can meaningfully reduce the overall fare.
