One of the fun things about going on vacation is lighting up your socials with stunning pics of your adventures. However, as tempting as it may be, there are dangers in sharing too many details about your trip.

ALG Vacations consulted an online privacy expert, Trevor Cooke of EarthWeb, to offer some guidelines to stay safe when sharing.

Don't Post Your Travel Documents

First, don't post your travel documents. Boarding passes and passports have lots of personal details and as tempting as it may be to share those first-class upgrades, sharing these offer scam artists crucial details such as travel dates that alert them you are away from home.

“Never share photos of your boarding pass, as they feature a barcode that can reveal more details about your travel plans and private data. Criminals can use this to discover your flight, seat number, and contact details. They can then steal your phone number, driver’s license information, and passport specifics to identify identity fraud,” warned Cooke.

Don't Share Your Room Number While You're Traveling

It's a great idea to recommend specific hotel rooms on social or in online reviews but make sure you wait until you are home, Cooke recommends.

"Doing so could reveal your exact location and the duration of your stay, which could leave you vulnerable to stalking or targeted theft," he said.

Share Stories

Another suggestion from Cooke is to share Stories instead of posts. Stories are only up for 24 hours and gives followers a peak into your exciting travels. Save posts to your feed until you are home.
