The Trump Administration has quickly been making an impact on the travel industry.
The biggest relates to the tariffs and his comments towards Canada being the 51st state.
World travelers are re-thinking their plans of visiting the United States.
Canadian flight reservations to the US are down 70% from last year, and European bookings to the US this summer down 25%, which could result in a $9 billion loss in visitor spending, according to a Bloomberg report.
U.S. Travel Association’s CEO called on Congress last week saying urgent action is needed in upgrading America’s travel system. His key talking points all related to the challenges impacting visas, customs, and airport screening, plus the outdated technology in use at the air traffic control systems.
“The reality is: Bold leadership is required now to prioritize travel. Our travel systems are under pressure, and without immediate action, we risk falling behind,” Geoff Freeman, president and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association, said.
There’s no doubt the US travel scene from foreign visitors will take a hit in 2025. The industry is already seeing it in the planning.
The big question mark remains, will it last beyond 2025…especially given the onslaught of major world events the US is hosting in 2026 and beyond. They include the 2026 World Cup, America’s 250th anniversary, and the 2028 Olympics. According to the US Travel Association, these events are expected to contribute nearly $100 billion in economic activity and bring an estimated 40 million international travelers.
Are those numbers still accurate, or has the damage been done enough that international travelers, particularly Canadians, won’t come for these historic events?
