Southwest announced it is adding new routes and also dropping a few in spring 2016. A Southwest spokesperson said the altered schedules, "reflect changes in travel patterns by customers."

In a bid to compete with Spirit and other ubiquitous low-cost airlines, American Airlines is introducing no-frills fares. The company is quick to say that more expensive, amenity-laden tickets aren't going anywhere.

British Airways is attempting for a third time to successfully maintain a route from JFK to London's Gatwick. Low load factors shuttered the route both times before, but the carrier feels current circumstances will make it a success in 2016.

The FAA is taking a long look at Allegiant, after a lengthy trend of maintenance problems by the low-cost airline. The culmination of this was an issue with loose bolts in the tail sections of multiple planes that could have caused "catastrophic failure."

Finally, in a pair of trending airport security stories, Dubai International airport will be gradually replacing its immigration counters with computers, making immigration processing much faster, but travelers will be required to register first.
