2021's Top US and International Spring Break Travel Destinations

Spring Break Favorites

1/21
Allianz Partners has revealed its top 20 spring break destinations for 2021 based on traveler demand. The award-winning travel insurance and assistance company analyzed nearly two million flight itineraries for trips between five and eight days in length to determine the top spring break vacation spots both domestically and internationally. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Florida and Mexico continue to dominate, accounting for eight of the 20 places Americans are most interested in visiting this spring break.

10. Denver, Colorado

2/21
A surprise entry, the Mile High City is new to the domestic top 10 in 2021, replacing destinations like Los Angeles and New York City, which have enforced far stricter lockdown methods and travel restrictions over the past year.

9. Honolulu, Hawaii

3/21
Despite its relatively recent reopening and being among the most restrictive states in terms of out-of-state travel amid COVID-19, Hawaii is attracting plenty of travelers ahead of spring break 2021, with the Aloha State's capital city, Honolulu, climbing into the top 10 despite high season usually wrapping up this time of year.

8. Salt Lake City, Utah

4/21
Salt Lake City is up one spot from last year to eighth domestically in 2021. Utah continues to enforce a statewide mask mandate, but the Beehive State currently has no restrictions, allowing spring breakers to tour more of SLC and its marquee attractions such as Temple Square without the worry of being turned away.

7. Tampa, Florida

5/21
One of five Florida cities in the top 10 this year, Tampa rose three spots to seventh in 2021. The tourist-friendly city on Florida's Gulf Coast gained some extra recognition from the hometown Buccaneers' run to the NFL title this past winter. Tampa continues to offer visitors a vast array of things to do, including a plethora of outdoor excitement in the form of amusement parks, waterfront sites and other attractions.

6. Fort Myers, Florida

6/21
Phenomenal weather, beautiful white-sand beaches, wildlife and historical attractions combine to make Fort Myers one of the Sunshine State's most coveted destinations and one of the most sought-after in America when it comes to spring break. Fort Myers is up one spot from 2020 to sixth this year.

5. Las Vegas, Nevada

7/21
Las Vegas is down two spots from last year, but with pool season getting underway, Sin City remains a premier spring break destination for travelers looking to defrost in the desert while experiencing world-class casinos and delectable dishes from world-famous celebrity chefs.

4. Fort Lauderdale, Florida

8/21
Spring breakers eyeing an affordable beach vacation without the hassle will be pleasantly surprised in Fort Lauderdale. The destination's close proximity to Miami means that visitors can conveniently explore the Magic City without having to break the bank on accommodations and other expenses.

3. Miami, Florida

9/21
Sunny Miami is up five spots from last year, rising to number three in the U.S. South Beach and its nearby neighborhoods are a perennial spring break favorite for their unparalleled weather and buzz, but the relaxing of restrictions in recent months have made the region even more coveted to kick-off summer 2021.

2. Phoenix, Arizona

10/21
Another sun-kissed destination with a relatively laid-back approach to COVID-19 restrictions, Phoenix continues to hold down the number two spot domestically as travelers remain drawn to its summer-like climate, vast array of outdoor activities and attractions and accessibility from other major U.S. cities.

1. Orlando, Florida

11/21
The Theme Park Capital of the World remains the number one spring break destination in America, and it's not hard to understand why. Orlando's marquee attractions have reopened with enhanced health and safety protocols in place, and the Central Florida city is one of the most accessible and affordable to reach.

10. Liberia, Costa Rica

12/21
Costa Rica is one of the few international destinations that's not requiring Americans to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test result to visit this spring and thus is gaining momentum in terms of popularity. However, visitors will need a medical insurance policy to cover any COVID-19-related medical treatment or quarantine lodging while in the country. The often overlooked but history- and culture-rich city of Liberia is capitalizing on London and the Cayman Islands' strict travel restrictions to break into the top 10 this year.

9. San Jose, Costa Rica

13/21
The Costa Rican capital is also brand new to the top 10 this year, benefiting from the country's relatively relaxed entry requirements.

8. Nassau, Bahamas

14/21
While travelers still can't cruise to Nassau, the Bahamas are open for business via air travel. Nonetheless, Allianz's data show the destination is slipping slightly in terms of popularity, ranking third internationally in 2019, fourth in 2020 and eighth this year.

7. Providenciales, Turks and Caicos

15/21
The Turks and Caicos Islands was one of the first international destinations to welcome back tourists last year, helping keep the inviting Caribbean island of Providenciales firmly in the top 10 in 2021. The destination is a no-brainer for luxury travelers, and the beaches here, including Grace Bay, are among the world's best.

6. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

16/21
Like Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic is simplifying travel for Americans this spring by not requiring proof of a negative COVID-19 test result. That combined with exceptional all-inclusive resorts offering great deals and perks this spring helps make Punta Cana an unbeatable spring break getaway.

5. Montego Bay, Jamaica

17/21
Jamaica was among the first international destinations to safely reopen to international tourism last year, and the island did so by establishing resilient corridors. Montego Bay is situated within one of the corridors and remains the fifth-most popular spring break destination abroad.

4. Aruba

18/21
Aruba might be the big winner of 2021, based on Allianz Partners' findings. The Caribbean island has implemented elevated health and safety protocols designed to keep both visitors and locals safe and continues to climb the ranks in terms of popularity, rising from sixth in 2020 and 2019 to fourth overall internationally in 2021.

3. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

19/21
Mexico, which is not requiring proof of a negative COVID-19 test result to enter, remains as hot as ever ahead of spring break 2021 thanks to its beloved resort towns boasting great weather, loads of history and culture and plenty to do outdoors. Puerto Vallarta is just one example of a safe and diverse destination attracting visitors south of the border this spring.

2. San Jose del Cabo, Mexico

20/21
Elsewhere in Mexico, San Jose del Cabo is still the second-most sought-after international destination for spring break travel. A convenient flight for those on the West Coast, the tourist hotspot has received plenty of praise for the quick implementation of elevated health and safety measures and its resulting speedy tourism recovery.

1. Cancun, Mexico

21/21
Like Orlando in the U.S., Cancun continues to reign supreme as the number one international escape for spring break travelers. Americans don't need a negative COVID-19 test to visit and can find plenty of affordable flight options as well as awesome deals on all-inclusive resorts where they can safely spread out.
