Those of us who love wine appreciate that many of the vineyards are located in some of the world's most picturesque regions. Lucky for us that we can sip and taste our favorite varietals surrounded by bucolic rolling hills, verdant valleys and breathtaking views.

These nine destinations are sure to delight the passionate wine lover and provide travel memories to last a lifetime.

Wine lovers around the world flock to France for its abundance of vineyards and vintages. France is home to some of the most beautiful countrysides, and Bordeaux is one of our favorites. Arguably the most famous of the French wine regions, it also happens to be one of the most awe-inspiring.

Not only does Bordeaux have a renowned reputation for producing Old World reds, but the city of Bordeaux itself, a UNESCO World Heritage site, features magnificently preserved history with classical and neo-classical architecture. This charming town makes visitors feel as though they've become stuck in a time warp. And that's not such a bad thing.

In 2001, Portugal's Douro Valley was also bestowed UNESCO World Heritage recognition. This resplendent region is not only famous for its wine, but also for its sustainable tourism and wellness retreats.

Wineries in Northern Portugal are most known for producing Port, a sweet soft red often served as a dessert wine. Widely considered one of the loveliest wine regions in the world, the valley boasts not only breathtaking vineyards and jaw-dropping vistas but is further enhanced by the picturesque Douro River meandering through the central heart of the valley.

In the Spanish region named after the Oja River, vintners pride themselves on both ancient and modern winemaking techniques. Their craftsmanship produces internationally famed rich, red Rioja wines that perfectly balance fruit and spice.

Stellar winemaking coupled with the area's host of cultural experiences makes for an unbeatable combination. And to boot, the landscapes of the region are stunning. From Mediterranean forests, lofty mountain ranges, impressive castles and monasteries and even lunar landscapes, this Iberian region is so worth a visit.

Marlborough on New Zealand's South Island has emerged in recent years as one of the world's premier New World wine-producing regions, especially when it comes to producing Sauvignon Blanc in their unique grassy, racy and bracing winemaking style.

Though the verdant vineyards here produce some of the best award-winning wines, the region is also famous for its diverse landscapes, from vine-filled valleys to stunning picturesque sheltered waterways. And let's not forget its magnificent seafood sought by the world's finest chefs that pair perfectly with these whites.

With the Andes Mountains as a spectacular backdrop, Argentina's most important wine region accounts for nearly two-thirds of the country's entire wine production with Malbec as the star of the show.

Vineyards here are planted at some of the highest altitudes in the world, 2,000 to 3,600 feet above sea level. Besides the award-winning varietals coming from this fast-growing wine-producing region, Mendoza sports a postcard-perfect countryside paradise. With its mountain grandeur, cerulean skies and some of the best winery architecture in the world, this is part of heaven on earth.

I've been to several amazing wine regions in California, but I'm going to throw my number-one vote to Paso Robles, located near the stunningly picturesque Central Coast.

Once California's best-kept secret (but not for long), this is one of the state's hottest up-and-coming wine destinations. More than 60 grape varietals and countless blends are produced at its 250-plus wineries.

With outstanding vintages, dazzling panoramic vistas, rolling vine-covered hills, natural hot springs, amazing cuisine, a thriving art scene and small-town USA charm, one visit here and you'll understand why this area is so beloved.

With its ideal Mediterranean climate, this area is able to produce both amazing whites and outstanding reds. Pinotage (a cross between a Pinot Noir and Cinsault) has become South Africa's signature red.

It's no wonder the wine coming out of this region is so amazing-the University of Stellenbosch is one of the most prestigious viticultural schools in the world. The second oldest settlement in South Africa also has a fascinating oak-lined historic district. Additionally, its expansive wide-open fields are filled with fertile hills and valleys, picturesque hiking trails and an inspiring culinary and art scene.

Yes, it is every bit as drop-dead gorgeous as you've heard. And when it comes to wine production regions that have stood the test of time, few can compare to Tuscany.

Italy's most beautiful wine region is situated in central Italy along the picturesque Tyrrhenian coast. Nearly 70 percent of the region is characterized by verdant emerald hills, numerous notable appellations and iconic tall and slender Tuscan cypress trees. Both whites and reds are produced but the reds reign supreme. Although famous for its Chianti and Sangiovese varietals, Tuscany now has a new shining star, the Super Tuscan, which has garnished quite a cult following.

The USA's Pacific Northwest Coast is not only awe-inspiring, but it's also mind-blowing. The cool, moist Willamette Valley nestled between the Cascade Mountains and the Coast Range produces some of the world's best quality Pinot Noirs. Over 14,000-acres are dedicated to this grape alone.

The area's time-honored farm-to-fork foodie scene pairs beautifully with its legacy of fine wine. But what makes this pastoral region so alluring is its rustic, relaxing, laid-back simple lifestyle with a peaceful vibe that says "It's ok to sit a spell and drink in life."
