What It's Like to Camp in Patagonia

The Last Frontier?

1/10
Located in the southern most area of South America, Patagonia remains a wilderness frontier, with endless opportunities for outdoor exploration. But when it comes to a home base, why rough it? We take a look inside the beautiful Patagonia Camp, designed to put visitors comfortably in the heart of the wild.

One-of-a-Kind Views

2/10
Patagonia Camp has 20 yurts positioned on the hillside along Lake Toro. It's easy to see why the location was chosen. The view from the main lodge and most of the individual yurts provide a wonderful perspective on the landscape, including the jagged peaks of Torres del Paine National Park and the suspended, hanging glaciers that grace their tops.

The sun sets beyond the mountains across the lake, providing a dramatic, photogenic golden hour. In the fall, these sloping hillsides are dotted with the colorful leaves of changing trees.

Glamp Under the Stars

The circular yurts are simultaneously simple and luxurious. Soft colors dominate the décor, allowing the grain of the wood to jump out as the dominate tone. Hardwood floors, soft bathrobes, central heating, and a slate-tiled bathroom (with endless hot water) make one feel secure in the Patagonian wilderness. In the middle of the yurt is a round skylight. When you lay in bed, you can see the stars at night and the skies by day.

Connected, but not Disturbing Nature

4/10
The yurts, restaurant, and other property structures are connected via an elevated boardwalk. This allows the property to remain fully immersed in nature and offer a small footprint while, at the same time, ensure for safe, easy navigation on the hillside. The boardwalk expands to become small sitting areas directly outside of the yurts. Each yurt has its own private entrance off the main boardwalk.

Patagonia Camp operates similarly to an African safari lodge or an upscale lodge in the Atacama. Each day, the property offers a choice of excursions based on the time of year, weather, and guest interest. Some are the staples of the region-a full day guided hike to the infamous Torres Overlook in Torres del Paine National Park, for example (shown above). Others are more off the beaten path-Patagonia Camp's guides have a strong knowledge of the various lesser-known hiking trails that attract fewer crowds.

The Ultimate in Alone Time

6/10
Those looking for complete solidarity can opt for an excursion right outside their doorstep. Patagonia Camp is located on 131 square miles of private land and there are options for guests to hike, kayak, fish, and climb without leaving the property.

The opportunity to recreate on the property's own private land is perhaps the most intriguing part of Patagonia Camp, both now and in the future as they develop more trails. Torres del Paine National Park has experienced issues with overcrowding, and guests may find that exploring closer to home offers a more intimate experience.

Patagonian Cuisine

7/10
Because it is more than a one-hour drive to the closest town, guests will eat every meal at Patagonia Camp. The main lodge doubles as a bar and restaurant, its large windows providing a panoramic view of the mountains and lake. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served every day and can be purchased ala carte or via an all-inclusive package. The cuisine features Patagonian spices, such as merken and pebre, on main entrees that include southern hake, king crab, lamb, and local vegetables.

And Patagonian Drink

8/10
Meals are paired with a selection of wines from Matetic Vineyards in the Valparaiso countryside (one of the owners of Patagonia Camp also owns the winery). Be sure to try the local twist on the Pisco Sour, a Calafate Sour, which incorporates fresh Calafate berries in addition to lemon juice.

Where Cuisine Meets Culture

9/10
Once a week, Patagonia Camp offers special functions for its guests that blend cultural perspective and culinary treats.

For example, the Patagonian lamb barbeque allows guests to experience how lamb is traditionally cooked on a spit over an open flame. Guests can try different cuts of the lamb literally as they are cut, washing it down with a selection of paired wines.

Options to Step Up the Luxury

10/10
Most yurts accommodate double occupancy, but there is a selection of upgraded suites, or double yurts, for families. The construction is simply two yurts put together, side by side. The decision to put two yurts together instead of creating one big yurt allows for more flexibility-offering the option for two bedrooms or one bedroom with a large sitting area-and also helps maintain that cozy, low-impact feel that we seek in a yurt. You can see in the photo above how one yurt leads into another.
