The World's Most Expensive Cities for Five-Star Hotels

Extravagant Escapes

1/11
It's no secret that staying in a five-star hotel isn't cheap but travelers might be surprised to learn just how expensive it can get in some marquee destinations around the world. LuxuryHotel.com recently analyzed Euromonitor's Top 100 City Destinations using Booking.com to discover how many hotels there are in each city, and of those how many are five-star hotels. Here are the cities with the highest average nightly rate in 2021.

10. Toronto, Canada

2/11
With an average nightly rate of $472.24, Toronto rounds out the top 10 cities for the most expensive five-star hotels in 2021. Despite the hefty cost, Toronto's average still trails the most expensive city by more than $200 per night, according to LuxuryHotel.com's research.

9. Milan, Italy

3/11
Milan is one of five Italian cities to make the top 10 list of the most expensive cities for five-star hotel stays in 2021. An average nightly rate of $473.65 definitely stands out but the fashion and design capital has ways to go to catch Italy's more costly destinations.

8. Miami, Florida

4/11
Miami is undoubtedly a popular place for travelers seeking out a lavish getaway and those visitors can expect to pay around $477.89 for one night in a five-star hotel. Travelers will find fewer five-star options compared to some other major destinations around the globe, though, with the Magic City being home to just 23 elite properties and 546 total.

7. Florence, Italy

5/11
The capital of Tuscany, Florence tops Miami by a comfortable margin but still can't compete with Italy's and Europe's priciest destinations for five-star hotel properties. Florence's average nightly rate of $493.45 is still $170 cheaper than the most expensive city in Europe.

6. Venice, Italy

6/11
The average five-star hotel stay in Venice will cost travelers $518.90 per night. Somehow, that's nearly $40 cheaper than Italy's most expensive city for swank overnight accommodations and a more than $150 discount compared to the world's most costly city.

5. Rome, Italy

7/11
Rome's one-night five-star hotel stay price tag of $558.49 is awfully lofty but it still pales in comparison to some U.S. cities that LuxuryHotel.com analyzed. Fortunately, with so much to explore here, travelers won't need to blow their budget on a luxe stay to have a great time.

4. Honolulu, Hawaii

8/11
The Hawaiian capital offers affluent travelers plenty of exciting five-star hotel options at an average nightly rate of $585.35, making it the third most expensive American city for an opulent stay and the fourth priciest worldwide in 2021.

3. Orlando, Florida

9/11
Orlando is renowned for its world-class theme parks and budget-friendly travel costs and experiences. Nonetheless, a five-star stay in the Theme Park Capital of the World will set you back an average of $663.11 per night. Orlando lacks the number of options compared to some other major cities, which means less competition in the end.

2. Paris, France

10/11
The City of Light narrowly edges out Orlando with an average nightly rate of $664.53. Paris can be pricey, sure, but travelers aren't without options as it boasts well over 4,000 hotels, including nearly 150 five-star properties. Only London, Dubai and Shanghai are home to more.

1. Los Angeles, California

11/11
Los Angeles is the most expensive destination in the world when it comes to luxe stays at five-star hotels as the average one-night check-in will set travelers back an eye-popping $675.84. While L.A. is home to more than 800 hotels, only 29 of them or 3.61 percent qualify as five-star properties.
