Cairo Bazaar Attack Kills One Tourist, Injures 17

A grenade was thrown on Sunday into the main plaza at Cairo's Khan el-Khalili, a 650-year-old bazaar, killing a French tourist and wounding at least 17 people, most of them foreign tourists, according to press reports. Security officials said the attacker escaped, and within an hour police found a second grenade and detonated it safely. The wounded reportedly included three Saudis, 10 French tourists, a German and three Egyptians. The outdoor cafes and restaurants lining the square were packed with crowds. The area reportedly has been sealed off after bomb disposal experts were sent in to defuse a second device that failed to explode. The same market area was attacked in April 2005, killing three tourists. The last major attack against tourists in Egypt was at Dahab on the Red Sea, an incident that killed 23. Some Egyptian officials reportedly speculated that the new attack was orchestrated by an amateur who might have been upset about the recent conflict in Gaza between Israelis and Palestinians.
