Travel Advisor Success Stories focus on accomplished advisors and how they achieved success. Here’s a look at Dawn Thompason, a travel advisor with Carlisle Travel Management.
How did you get your start as a travel advisor?
My journey into travel started with a dream of becoming a cruise director, but I quickly realized I wasn’t going to be singing or dancing my way into the industry. What I did know was that I loved working with people and creating memorable experiences.
The real turning point came when I planned a trip to Disneyland for my family. I handled every detail –researching, organizing and staying within budget, and when I shared the plan with a family friend who was a travel agent, she told me I had already done the job. That was the moment it clicked.
I enrolled in travel school the next day and began my career over 30 years ago as a full-service advisor. From the start, I knew I had found the right profession because it combined planning, organization and connecting with people and ultimately helping create lasting memories.
How did you build your business?
I built my business through trust, consistency and relationships. Early on, repeat clients and referrals became the foundation of my growth because I focused on delivering personal service and genuinely caring about each traveler’s experience.
As my knowledge and client base grew, so did the complexity of the trips I was planning. I continued to invest in learning, traveling firsthand and building strong industry partnerships that allow me to add value for my clients.
I’ve always believed that if you take great care of people, they return and bring others with them.
What characteristics make you a successful advisor?
My success comes down to listening, attention to detail and genuinely caring about my clients. Great travel planning starts with understanding what matters most to each person.
I focus on the details that make a trip smoother and more enjoyable – the things clients may not always notice but that have the biggest impact on their experience.
With more than three decades in the industry, I’m also able to anticipate needs, solve problems quickly and guide clients with confidence.
What have been your greatest challenges?
One of the biggest challenges has been adapting to how much the travel industry has changed over the years, from technology to shifting traveler expectations and unexpected global events.
Another challenge has been helping people understand the value of working with an experienced advisor in a world where online booking appears simple. What many travelers come to realize is that expertise, advocacy and personalized service matter most when it counts.
These challenges have pushed me to evolve.
What are your greatest accomplishments?
My greatest accomplishment is the trust my clients place in me year after year. Having clients return for decades, refer their families and friends and rely on me for their most important trips is incredibly meaningful.
Professionally, I’m proud to have built a career spanning more than 30 years and to have created custom travel experiences around the world.
Helping people create lasting memories is what I value most.
What tips can you provide to advisors new to the industry?
Focus on relationships, not transactions. Clients want to feel known, valued and cared for.
Never stop learning. Destination knowledge, supplier relationships and firsthand experience are invaluable.
Be patient. This is a business that grows over time. Build your reputation one client at a time and always pay attention to the details.
What does travel mean to you? Travel means connection – to people, cultures and experiences that expand your perspective.
It takes you out of your daily routine and reminds you how much there is to discover in the world.
Those moments stay with you long after you return home, and I truly believe travel makes people more appreciative and open-minded.
