Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta
International Airport has announced the opening of three new gates — ahead of
schedule, no less.
The achievement
comes as part of the airport’s ongoing Concourse D expansion project, a $1.4
billion effort that the city’s WSB-TV
reports is now about halfway complete.
Atlanta Mayor
Andre Dickens joined airport leaders to celebrate the milestone, noting that
the project has been designed to improve the passenger experience while
minimizing headaches for travelers during construction.
"Not only
will they raise the comfort bar, but we figured out how to do it with the
minimal amount of disruption along the way, and we are bringing the gates
online earlier than expected," Dickens said.
When finished,
the expansion project will lengthen Concourse D by nearly 300 feet and widen it by almost 40 feet, creating more room for passengers and airport operations.
"Travelers
coming to this concourse will be greeted with comfort, care, and new
space," Dickens said.
Construction is
still ongoing, and Frank Rucker, Hartsfield-Jackson's senior deputy general
manager of Infrastructure, noted that the pace of work will pick up over the
next few years.
"To put this
in perspective, in the year '27 we are anticipating doing $1 million of
construction a day," he said.
Dickens said the
goal is to modernize the airport while keeping disruptions to a minimum for the
millions of travelers who pass through Atlanta each year.
"We are
continuing to innovate and elevate, and we are constantly improving," the
mayor said.
The Concourse D expansion is slated for completion in 2029.
