Ask most people what they picture their retirement looking like, and roughly two-thirds of them report that traveling is an important—or sometimes the primary—goal of their post-working life. In the United States, many retirees are focused on traveling internationally, to experience different cultures, cuisines, history, geographic marvels and more. Now IMG (International Medical Group) has conducted a review of customer travel plans for this fall travel season, from the beginning of September to the end of November.
IMG focused on the travel itineraries of more than 40,000 of its members who had upcoming travel plans, to identify travel trends for the upcoming season. Among the results were the top five international destinations for American travelers, which proved to represent a variety of travel desires. In order, the top five countries were Mexico, Italy, Canada, the Bahamas, and the United Kingdom. IMG noted that Mexico has remained in the top spot for four consecutive years now. Spain fell out of the top five, being replaced by the Bahamas.
“Our autumn travel data reflects continued confidence among international travelers,” said Grant Hayes, Global Head of Travel for IMG. “Travelers are planning more trips and spending more on their travel experiences, while continuing to prioritize destinations that offer a mix of cultural experiences and relaxation.”

Other data that the travel trends report shows include:
• Travelers continue to invest more in trips, up roughly 6% from a year ago.
• There has been a 15% increase in travelers purchasing insurance policies for fall trips.
• Older travelers are still interested in international travel, with 50% of the travelers in the report being 65 years or older and 15% being 75 years or older.
“International travel continues to resonate across generations, particularly among retirees who have both the time and flexibility to explore the world,” said Justin Poehler, IMG Chief Commercial Officer. “As more travelers invest in meaningful travel experiences, having the right protection and support remains an important part of trip planning.”
