Singapore’s Changi Airport, already considered one of the
nicest airports in the world, has reopened Terminal
2 after nearly a three-and-a-half-year makeover.
The makeover expanded the terminal.
“With T2, we sought to enhance the passenger experience,
bringing together a modern terminal inspired by nature, with immersive digital
experiences, innovative technology, as well as transformative retail and dining
concepts that create a sense of place,” said Lye Teck, Changi Airport Group’s
program director for the Terminal 2 expansion project, in a statement.
More than 225,000 square feet have been added to the
terminal.
The centerpiece of the makeover, and sure to be the main
attraction, is a nearly 46-foot tall digital waterfall. It is known as “The
Wonderfall.”
That’s not the only digital aspect of the airport.
One portion of the airport also features a digital sky that
changes color depending on what time of day it is. There is also a two-story
duty-free wine and spirits store that features a robotic bartender.
The new terminal is a mix of nature and technology.
The newly expanded terminal allows the airport to handle
five million more passengers per year, bringing its total to 95 million
passengers. The terminal will accommodate 16 airlines servicing 40
destinations.
After a two-year hiatus as the world’s best airport, as
determined by Skytrax, Changi took the title back earlier this year.
The airport has been open since 1981, and Terminal 2 has
been open since 1991. Changi now boasts a swimming pool, movie theater and
sports arena. The facility actually has two more terminals that have a slide
and a butterfly garden.
Changi is known to be innovative.
