Delta Air Lines has reportedly hired a prominent law firm to
pursue potential damages related to the tech
outages that caused thousands of delays and cancellations in July.
According to CNBC.com,
Delta has enlisted the help of well-known law firm Boies Schiller Flexner LLP
to determine what legal ramifications CrowdStrike and Microsoft could face for
their role in the travel chaos caused by computer issues.
No lawsuit has been filed yet, but a Delta spokesperson said
the airline “plans to seek potential compensation from both companies.” The
carrier said last week that “operational reliability [had] returned to normal”
after around half of its IT systems worldwide were impacted.
“Delta is committed to caring for our customers during this
time and has taken a number of other steps to make things right for customers
affected by delays and cancellations,” an airline spokesperson said in a statement.
On July 19, CrowdStrike implemented a software update with
an error in the code, resulting in a meltdown within the Windows operating
system. As a result, Delta’s systems were disrupted for more than six days,
causing flight delays and cancellations.
In response, the United States Department of Transportation
has launched an investigation into how the airline handled the computer
issues and whether the company properly compensated impacted travelers.
In total, the tech issues reportedly cost Delta between $350
million and $500 million.
