One low-cost airline is giving its most loyal fliers a valuable new perk: the ability to bring along a travel companion on all flights, practically for free.
Frontier Airlines has just added a companion travel benefit for its Elite Platinum and Diamond Status members of the airline’s Frontier Miles program.
Fliers with one of the two qualifying elite statuses can simply enter the name of their travel companion when booking their flights. Members must be logged into their Frontier Miles account to book, and the travel companion must also have a frequent flier membership, too.
Frontier says that members are allowed to choose different travel companions for each flight, and there’s no limit to the amount of times they can use the benefit, making it one of the most flexible companion travel programs in the industry.
Once the companion’s name is added to the booking, the elite status member only needs to pay the taxes on their plus-one’s ticket, which usually is $5.60 one way. To unlock the benefit, travelers need to earn 50,000 Elite Status Points to achieve Elite Platinum Status or 100,000 points for Elite Diamond Status.
The addition of the new perk seemed to be aimed at winning over more Southwest passengers, some of whom are unhappy with the Dallas-based airline’s recent changes, like getting rid of its free checked bags and open seating policies. Southwest also offers a popular companion pass for loyalty members who attain a certain status.
“We are laser-focused on delivering real value and rewards to customers left behind by other airline loyalty programs, and our new companion travel shows our commitment to offering convenience, flexibility and our signature affordability,” said Bobby Schroeter, Frontier’s chief commercial officer.
In recent months, Frontier has been targeting Southwest’s customers by offering its Rapid Rewards members perks such as access to Frontier Miles Gold Elite Status, which offers benefits like a free carry-on and priority boarding.
Frontier is offering another status giveaway to celebrate the launch of its companion travel benefit. The airline will offer free Platinum Status through August 31 to 100 randomly selected travelers, meaning the winners will have access to free companion travel throughout the entire summer vacation season.
Travelers can enter the giveaway through May 21 on Frontier’s website.
