The next time you step onto a Frontier Airlines plane, you might notice a major change to the boarding process.
The low-cost carrier is adding new boarding groups in a change that it says will make the enplaning procedure more streamlined and efficient.
The total number of boarding groups will increase from four to seven, with new groups designed to reward the airline’s loyalty members and those who purchase add-ons before their flight.
“Flying with Frontier just became an even more seamless experience,” said Bobby Schroeter, Frontier’s chief commercial officer. “Our new boarding groups are designed to reward our most loyal customers and enhance the overall travel experience for everyone.”
The number of groups technically rises to eight total tiers when pre-boarding is counted. Customers eligible to enter the plane first with pre-boarding include passengers with disabilities and those who need extra time, including families traveling with children under 2 or with a car seat or stroller. Active-duty military and Frontier Miles Elite Diamond members also qualify to pre-board.
Following pre-boarders will be Group 1 customers, including Frontier Miles Elite Platinum and Gold members, passengers who bought Business or Premium Bundles or the Board First add-on.
The Group 2 boarding tier will be reserved for Frontier Miles members who purchased an Economy Bundle or a carry-on bag. Following them is Group 3, reserved for any other flier who purchased an Economy Bundle or carry-on bag.
The new Group 4 boarding tier is likely to be one of the busiest on every flight, as it includes Frontier Miles Elite Silver members (who were not eligible for an earlier boarding group), Frontier Airlines World Mastercard cardmembers, anyone who purchased priority boarding, and passengers seated in Premium or an Exit Row (who were not eligible for an earlier boarding group).
Group 5 is for all other members of the airline’s Frontier Miles loyalty program.
Finally—and unsurprisingly—the passengers in basic economy are the last to board the plane. Group 6 is for basic customers who are seated in the rear half of the cabin while the final Group 7 is meant for passengers in the front half of the cabin.
The new boarding process is part of a larger suite of changes that Frontier has been making to its passenger experience in recent months. Part of that revamp has included new, more premium perks such as unlimited companion travel for its top-tier loyalty members and forthcoming first class seats, which are set to launch by the end of 2025.
