Airlines today pranked travelers with fake news of plans to add new
long-haul service to Bora Bora as an April Fools’ joke.
The airline purported
to be initiating twice-weekly flights from New York’s John F. Kennedy
International Airport to the French
Polynesian paradise beginning June 1. That would have been quite a far-off
destination to start service to, given that Frontier’s route map is currently
isolated to the Americas.
The Denver-based airline
also teased that it would be adding new wide-body aircraft to its fleet
beginning in June, which it said would feature lie-flat seating, a chef-curated
inflight menu and free Wi-Fi for all passengers.
The audacious claims
outlined in its announcement continued to escalate, as Frontier said that it
would be holding a one-day-only fare sale, offering flights to Bora Bora for
just a single dollar.
Perhaps most
shocking of all, was Frontier’s declaration that that it would hold a random
drawing awarding 100 winners an all-expense paid trip for themselves and three
friends to visit Bora Bora. Supposedly, the first 10,000 individuals who sign
up for the airline’s frequent flyer program would be entered in the contest, a trick
which may have won Frontier some new members.
“This is a
monumental day in the history of Frontier Airlines,” Frontier CEO Barry Biffle
kidded. “With the addition of new wide-body aircraft to our fleet, we are
turning the airline industry on its head with a new luxury flight experience
that is a total reimagining of our business model. We are also proud to be the
first U.S. ultra-low-cost carrier to offer service to the South Pacific.”
