The parent company of Frontier Airlines is an investment firm named Indigo Partners, that previously was a major financier of Spirit Airlines, which last year raked in $181 million in baggage fees according to the Department of Transportation.

Clearly, Indigo is hoping for a little déjà vu.

Frontier Airlines on May 1 will raise its baggage fees for anybody who doesn't pay for their bags prior to arriving at the airport. According to the Los Angeles Times, it will cost you $5 more for the first bag when passengers pay at the gate, pay during online check-in, or use the airline's call center. The $5 increase also applies to the second and third bag when paid for at the airport check-in. Frontier already charges $20 in fees for the first bag, and $30 for a second bag.

It gets a bit dicier if you take a carry-on to the gate, and it's too big. Any bag that needs to be checked at the gate goes up $10, to a new fee of $60. If your carry-on does fit within the maximum carry-on dimensions, there is no extra charge above the current $30 to $40 fee.

Southwest Airlines still remains the only major carrier in the U.S. that allows two free checked bags.
