Many travelers who have made their way through John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City over the years remember the former Trans World Airlines terminal, but a new effort from a group of investors hopes to turn the building into an up-scale hotel.

According to Nadja Brandt and Mary Schlangenstein of Bloomberg.com, the group is led by hotel company MCR Development LLC and also features New York-based JetBlue Airways Corp. as a smaller financial investor. The group is reportedly in talks with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to revamp the old airline terminal.

The report claims JetBlue has a vested interest in the project due to the close proximity of the former TWA terminal to its own terminal at the airport. Having a hotel that close could give the airline an advantage over some of the other competition in the same market.

JetBlue is also reportedly interested in paying homage to one of the most interesting and unique buildings in the aviation industry.

Brandt and Schlangenstein claim that JetBlue is not looking to get into the hotel business, but feels this is a wise investment for the company at John F. Kennedy International Airport. The new hotel would not feature the airline's name on the building, though.

The historic TWA terminal was built in 1962 and was designated a historical landmark by New York City in 1994. If that wasn't enough to prove the historical value of the building, the National Park Service officially listed the terminal in its registry in 2005.

Travelers who have come to love the image of the terminal when taking off or landing must be excited about the possibility of checking in for the night at an iconic landmark.
