On Monday, LATAM Airlines Group announced several new routes as the company continues to enhance international long-haul and regional flights.
According to Rosalba O'Brien of Reuters.com, Latin America's largest airline is looking to increase its numbers by adding routes from one of its main hubs in Lima, Peru. LATAM also announced it would be attempting to add a transatlantic route to Africa.
Starting in December, LATAM's hub in Lima will start flying new routes to Montevideo, Uruguay, and Antofagasta, Chile, and will also add a route to Washington D.C. in the middle of 2016.
In addition to the already added routes, the airline was also waiting for regulatory approval on potential flights from Sao Paulo, Brazil, to Johannesburg, South Africa. If the company gains the necessary approval, it would be the only Latin American airline to connect the two continents.
While LATAM is reporting success, there are also some issues the company is dealing with in terms of the struggling Brazilian economy. The country is dealing with issues regarding recession and currency, and the airline will be cutting routes that aren't fiscally reasonable.
Not all of the airline's route changes are additions, however; LATAM will be cancelling its flights from Belo Horizonte to Miami. Travelers in the United States looking to visit Brazil can still use one of the airlines' other routes, though.
LATAM was formed in 2012 when Chile's LAN airlines and Brazil's TAM airlines joined forces.
