Frequent fliers will now be able to cash in their hard-earned miles on a new type of transit, thanks to Lyft’s newest app feature.
In a first-of-its-kind offering, the rideshare company has launched a new option for passengers to pay with United Airlines MileagePlus miles directly within the Lyft app.
In order to redeem their frequent flier miles for rides, passengers must link their MileagePlus account with their Lyft profile. Once the accounts are linked, travelers will see an option to pay with MileagePlus miles when requesting a ride. The app will show users how many miles will be redeemed before they confirm the booking, and after the ride, users will receive a receipt showing how many miles were deducted from their loyalty account.
Travelers are able to use miles across all Lyft ride types. Plus, passengers will be able to use a combination of miles and other forms of payment if they don’t have enough miles in their loyalty account to cover their ride.
"We’re giving MileagePlus members more ways to use their miles – whether it’s booking a United flight to a dream destination or traveling across town to meet up with friends through Lyft,” said Jarad Fisher, president of United MileagePlus.
Since November 2025, travelers have been able to earn MileagePlus miles on Lyft rides by linking their two accounts. But this will be the first time ever passengers will have the ability to both earn and redeem from their loyalty accounts.
“Many MileagePlus members have already linked their account with Lyft, showing strong demand for earning miles and more flexible ways to engage with the MileagePlus program,” Fisher said. “Together with Lyft, we're expanding how and where members can use their miles — unlocking simple, flexible ways to redeem them across their daily lives, no matter how far they’re going."
