It’s not a maintenance issue or a staffing problem—it’s a lawsuit.
The New England Patriots are suing Eastern Airlines for $22 million alleging breach of contract because the airline allegedly tried to change the terms of its agreement with the team over its private plane.
The Patriots allege they were approached by Eastern Airlines earlier this summer about changing the terms of the contract. The original contract was supposed to last until 2026. Eastern Airlines was contracted to provide all services for the Patriots, including the flight crew.
Eastern Airlines allegedly demanded more money for their services.
The club balked at the apparent request and in the lawsuit called it a case of extortion. The team has been owned by Robert Kraft, the former head of Gillette, for 28 years.
In addition to filing the lawsuit, the Patriots have terminated their contract with Eastern Airlines. New England actually has two team planes and have grounded both. In order to get to away games so far this season, New England has chartered planes with American Airlines.
