Reuters is reporting that the low-cost European airline wants to start flying to the U.S. as early as 2017, and thinks it can do so by using secondary airports that have little or no current international service.
For instance, instead of flying into one of the three major airports, Norwegian Air would fly into suburban Westchester County Airport in White Plains, N.Y., less than an hour's drive from New York City. The methodology, Chief Executive Officer Bjørn Kjos told Reuters, is that the smaller airports charge fewer fees.
Norwegian Air would utilize airports in Edinburgh, Scotland, and Bergen, Norway.
Regulators will have to agree to set up customs stations at U.S. regional airports to handle international traffic, although Kjos told Reuters he is confident this can be arranged.
He also said Norwegian would utilize smaller jets that do have the capacity to make trans-Atlantic flights so as not to disrupt or inconvenience smaller airports that may not be prepared to handle an aircraft like a Boeing 767.
