As of July 9, the Palm Beach International Airport has been officially renamed the President Donald J. Trump International Airport.
The change does not mean the official airport code, which is PBI, will change just yet, however, according to CBS News. The airport's website has been changed to reflect the new name.
Earlier this year, Florida lawmakers pushed a bid to rename the airport after Trump, a measure that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law in March and that goes into effect this month. The FAA approved the measure, though the airport code will not change to DJT until August 18.
This means that until that date, traveler ticketing and flight information will use the PBI code, whereas pilots and air traffic controllers will use DJT. The 40-day period is to allow for all systems to be updated with the new code.
President Donald Trump is often one of the nearly eight million travelers who pass through the airport each year, on his way to Mar-a-Lago.
"The Area is HOT, the Location is GREAT, and the Renovation will be SPECTACULAR," he said on Truth Social. "This will soon be one of the Greatest and Most Spectacular Airports anywhere in the World!"
In May of this year, the Trump Organization filed for a trademark for the use of the president’s name at any airport, around the time that Palm Beach County commissioners approved a licensing deal for his name on the airport. Trump is not allowed to receive financial compensation from his newly named airport, but the airport is allowed to use his name, image and likeness.
A Rare Airport Code Change Decision
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) says it rarely approves changes to airport codes, which are often considered permanent, and “are almost never changed—and then only with strong justification, primarily concerning air safety.”
"IATA has acted on a request from airlines serving Palm Beach International Airport to change the airport's IATA 3-letter code from PBI to DJT, along with the change of the location name to President Donald J. Trump International Airport," an IATA spokesperson said.
Flight attendants will be allowed to continue saying “Welcome to West Palm Beach,” upon arrival.
"While we recognize that the required name change may be received in different ways by our passengers, we're grateful for your continued support through this transition period," explained the airport in its FAQs. "We remain committed to serving all passengers and ensuring a positive travel experience."
Major U.S. airlines serving the airport sent the official code change request, including Delta, United, American Airlines, JetBlue and Southwest.
