Southwest Airlines has officially joined the ranks of carriers offering overnight travel, marking a significant milestone in the company's 50-plus-year history. The airline's first-ever redeye flights landed on February 14, Valentine’s Day. Passengers and crew celebrated the launch of these inaugural redeyes with special Southwest swag and celebrations at the gate.

“While redeye flights will make up a small portion of Southwest’s overall schedule, they bring additional connectivity and more itineraries to transcontinental and Hawaii markets. As an example, Southwest will offer Honolulu (HNL) to Las Vegas (LAS) in April, and this one redeye flight increases the number of itineraries the airline can offer Customers by 50% as they connect to other parts of the network,” the airline wrote in a news release.

Southwest is currently operating overnight flights on five routes:

  • Las Vegas (LAS) to Baltimore/Washington (BWI)
  • Las Vegas (LAS) to Orlando (MCO)
  • Los Angeles (LAX) to Baltimore/Washington (BWI)
  • Los Angeles (LAX) to Nashville (BNA)
  • Phoenix (PHX) to Baltimore/Washington (BWI)

Southwest strategically selected these routes based on customer demand, as well as their connectivity to major crew bases and operational hubs. Currently, nearly 75 percent of passengers booked on these overnight flights are connecting to another leg of their journey, either before or after their redeye.

As the summer travel season approaches, the airline plans to increase its redeye offerings to as many as 33 flights per day by June.

The addition of redeye flights is part of Southwest’s larger “Southwest. Even Better.” transformational initiative, aimed at improving the airline’s efficiency and financial standing, and enhancing flexibility for its customers. By utilizing aircraft more effectively, the company expects to free up the equivalent of 18 additional planes' worth of flying time without adding to its fleet.

Icelandair Partnership Launch

In addition to its new overnight services, on February 13, Southwest launched an interline partnership with Icelandair through its shared Baltimore/Washington gateway. This partnership allows travelers to book itineraries that include flights on both carriers through Icelandair’s website and select third-party platforms.

Southwest plans to introduce additional shared gateways in Nashville and Denver later this year, with more destinations expected to follow. The airline also hinted at adding at least one more interline partner before the year’s end.
