Good news for cost-conscious travelers looking to explore one of the most rugged and striking landscapes in the United States: Southwest Airlines just announced it will launch its first-ever route to Alaska in 2026.

The Dallas-based carrier says it intends to begin flights to Anchorage, Alaska's Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) sometime next spring.

Although the full details for the new route aren’t being released, Southwest says that the new flights will launch sometime in the first half of next year. Fares are expected to go on sale later this month with the planned extension of the carrier’s schedule into 2026.

Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska and a gateway to many of the state’s breathtaking natural wonders. Recently, Southwest has been focused on adding destinations that are more unconventional than the airline’s previous network strategy.

"We're adding destinations that once seemed inconceivable for Southwest in order to build a route network that creates new experiences and more possibilities than ever before," said Andrew Watterson, Chief Operating Officer at Southwest Airlines. "We look forward to connecting our Customers to the rich history and culture of Anchorage and connecting the 49th state to our vast domestic network."

With the new Anchorage route, Southwest has announced five new destinations so far in 2025, including new routes to Sint Maarten and St. Thomas in the Caribbean, Knoxville, Tennessee, and Sonoma County, California.

Aside from its new route strategy, Southwest has also been transforming its passenger experience. Earlier this year, the airline began charging for checked luggage and nixed its iconic open seating policy in favor of assigned seats and seat selection fees.

Although those changes weren’t initially popular with its core customers, the airline has managed to continue to turn a steady profit, with only small drops in passenger revenue so far throughout 2025.
