TAP Air Portugal, the national carrier of Portugal, is continuing its North American expansion with new direct service between San Francisco and the Azores.
The new route, which will take travelers to the Azores island of Terceira, brings the carrier’s total flight service from North America up to 100 weekly flights this summer.
The SFO-Azores route will operate weekly on Tuesdays and will be served by an Airbus A330-900neo aircraft.
“We are thrilled to welcome TAP Air Portugal flights to the Azores,” SFO Airport Director Mike Nakornkhet said in a statement. “We appreciate their ongoing commitment to the San Francisco market with this latest service.”
TAP has been busy growing its North American presence and last year carried a record 1.59 million passengers between North America and Portugal. That figure represents an 8.9 percent year-over-year increase and amounts to about 10 percent of TAP’s global total of 16.1 million passengers for 2024.
Last year was the first time the airline carried more than 1.5 million passengers on its US and Canadian routes, reflecting the largest percentage increase of passengers carried globally, the airline said in a statement.
The new SFO route is just the latest expansion announcement from TAP. In May, the airline announced new routes from Boston and Los Angeles to Portugal.
“It’s so exciting to continue to see TAP grow and attract new North American travelers with these three new routes,” Carlos Antunes, TAP’s Director for the Americas, said.
