If you are in the vicinity of the
Chicago region and are looking to travel internationally over the summer,
United Airlines has another long-haul route for you.
United will fly directly from Chicago to Athens, Greece, this summer.
The service starts on May 23 and runs
through August 12, with tickets already on sale.
"With
nonstop service to destinations no other U.S. carriers serve, earlier
starts to our most popular seasonal routes and even more transatlantic flights
for our customers across the country, United is the clear choice for customers
looking to travel to Europe this summer," Patrick Quayle, United's senior
vice president of global network planning and alliances, said in a statement.
The
airline will operate a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner on the route to Greece.
In
addition to Chicago, United will add departure cities to Athens from Newark
Airport in New Jersey and Washington, D.C.
The
airline plans to resume its seasonal service from Newark to Athens on March 30
and from Washington on April 14.
United
will offer 15 nonstop European destinations this summer from its Chicago hub at
O'Hare International Airport. The carrier is challenging American Airlines on
the Chicago-to-Athens route, as American is scheduled to start its summer
service to the Greek capital on May 6.
This
is the second new international route that United has offered for the summer,
with flights from San Francisco to Barcelona beginning on May 23.
Earlier
this week, United added over
100 new flights to cities in the U.S. and Canada for its historic summer
season, including to destinations like Anchorage, Fairbanks, Calgary, Vancouver
and more.
