Ahead of America’s 250th birthday this July Fourth, travelers can’t get enough of Americana-inspired trips to the nation’s historical sites and famous landscapes.
New data from United Airlines shows that trips to national parks and cities steeped in Revolutionary War history are trending so far this summer.
Demand for flights to founding cities like Boston and Philadelphia has jumped by 10% and 25%, respectively year-over-year, according to United’s booking data.
Famous national parks from coast to coast are also seeing a boost in demand, with a nearly 10% jump in bookings to Bangor, Maine, (the gateway to Acadia National Park) and Montrose, Colorado, (near Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park) spanning late June through August.
Similarly, Bozeman, Montana, one of the most popular gateway cities to Yellowstone National Park, has seen a 20% jump in bookings through the rest of the summer compared to last year.
United expects to fly a total of about 6 million passengers over the July Fourth travel period from June 26 to July 6. The carrier will average about 550,000 passengers per day across nearly 5,000 daily flights.
In preparation for the peak travel weekend, United has launched new onboard perks, including new entertainment options and dining selections.
Starting July 1, travelers can watch the new “Devil Wears Prada 2” movie aboard flights with United, the first airline to show the summer blockbuster.
The carrier has also added live streaming TV content to its Starlink-enabled seatback screens through a new partnership with DIRECTV through July 20. That means travelers will be able to catch FIFA World Cup matches and other live shows while in flight.
When it comes to in-flight refreshments, travelers can start the July Fourth festivities with new Owen’s Margarita Mix across every cabin. The drink will be available for purchase in economy class and complimentary in premium cabins starting July 1.
