United Airlines released a report card noting that more than 27 million passengers are expected to travel during the upcoming spring break travel period, which runs from mid-to-late March as schools provide breaks for children, teens and young adults across the country.
The airline said it averages 4,900 flights per day during this period.
The top five U.S. destinations for United passengers during spring break are Orlando, Las Vegas, Honolulu, Phoenix, and Fort Lauderdale, as students and their families look for warm-weather escapes.
In fact, the airline said that 52% of spring break travelers are flying to the beach.
For these younger, less experienced fliers, United said that 75% find navigating an unfamiliar airport stressful and 73% worry about making a tight connection.
United recommends using the airline’s app to address some of these concerns, offering turn-by-turn directions in the airport, personalized maps to the gate, on-demand customer service, and ConnectionSaver, a service that sends an alert if your connecting flight is held for you.
Spring break travel isn’t just for single college kids; it also includes families with young children who are traveling to get away for a week or a weekend. United said that 2 out of 3 parents said in-flight WiFi is key to a happy flight. The airline offers more than 155,000 seatback screens across its fleet.
Travelers looking to watch or listen to something on their next United flight should know, however, that they are now required to do so with headphones; failure to comply with this new rule could get travelers kicked off their next flight.
