With the 2025 hurricane season officially underway as of June 1, travelers may want to know which airports are most prone to weather-related delays before locking in their summer travel plans.

Though we haven’t yet seen a major hurricane blow through, airports across the U.S. are already seeing a large number of flights disrupted or cancelled due to weather disruptions.

According to DOT airport stats– analyzed by the experts at InsureMyTrip – these U.S. airports had the highest weather delay rates:

  • Dallas/Fort Worth International – 1.44%
  • Minneapolis–St. Paul International – 1.23%
  • Detroit Metropolitan – 1.21%
  • Will Rogers World, Oklahoma City – 1.02%
  • Gerald R. Ford International, Grand Rapids – 1.00%

Those with the lowest weather delay rates include:

  • Oakland International – 0.16%
  • Kahului Airport, Maui – 0.23%
  • Hollywood Burbank Airport – 0.28%
  • San Jose International – 0.37%
  • Baltimore/Washington International – 0.38%

Why It Matters

Travelers take risks when booking during stormy seasons. High wind gusts and inclement weather can cause flight delays, and hurricanes come with their own set of complications for travel.

Delays can quickly derail a vacation – especially during hurricane season. That’s why experts recommend travel insurance with trip delay coverage.

Depending on the policy:

Trip Delay Coverage can reimburse travelers for meals, accommodations, and other essential expenses when flights are delayed for a covered reason (like severe weather), typically after a minimum delay threshold (often 6+ hours).

Trip Interruption Coverage may help if your trip is cut short due to weather emergencies – covering non-refundable expenses like tours, hotel bookings, or missed connections.

Missed Connection Coverage can provide additional reimbursement for travelers who miss a departure due to weather and need to catch up to their itinerary.

24/7 Assistance Services from insurers can help rebook flights, arrange emergency lodging, or provide support if you’re stranded far from home.

Suzanne Morrow, CEO/travel insurance expert at InsureMyTrip said in a statement, “Understanding how likely weather is to impact your departure or arrival airport can make a big difference. If you’re flying through weather-prone regions, travel insurance with trip delay coverage can protect your plans and your wallet.”

She added, “When booking summer travel during hurricane season, it pays to do your homework. Knowing which airports are most prone to weather delays can help you plan smarter – and pairing that knowledge with the right travel insurance provides an added layer of protection.”
