As if holiday travel wasn't busy enough, flight cancellations due to strikes and poor planning are mucking up the works.
Aeromexico passengers were left scrambling after the airline canceled dozens of flights due to a pilot strike. According to a Reuters report, pilots with Connect, the airline's regional operator, did not report for work in protest of the dismissal of a colleague.
"Aeromexico is working at maximum capacity to normalize operations as quickly as possible and is sorry for the inconvenience to clients," the company said in a statement.
At least 32 flights were canceled today from Mexico City Airport.
In echoes of a recent RyanAir debacle, American Airlines is anticipating some staffing problems during December.
Bloomberg is reporting that a staffing shortage could derail flights over the holidays.
A staffing glitch led to a shortage of pilots over the holidays says the Allied Pilots Association, the union representing the carrier's aviators. Apparently, American Airlines' scheduling system showed that some flights had ample staffing coverage when they did not.
American Airlines spokesman Matt Miller did not indicate a specific number of flights that were involved, but noted that the airline was working to correct the problem and avoid cancellations.
Pilots have been offered 150 percent of their normal hourly wage to pick up flights over the holidays.
