Amtrak Train Cancellations Prompt Significant Holiday Travel Delays Across Northeast

Some holiday travelers on the East Coast are having a hard time staying in the spirit of the season as Amtrak delays and cancellations are piling up along the Northeast Corridor just two days before Christmas.

"Delays continue along the Northeast Corridor as crews address signal power issues impacting the tracks in and out of New York Penn Station (NYP)," Amtrak said in an advisory posted early Monday morning. "Customers should expect a significant delay in and out of New York (NYP) due to single tracking conditions potentially causing rail congestion along our network."

Freezing temperatures in the Northeast are creating headaches for Amtrak and its passengers, with impacts being felt from Washington, D.C. to Boston.

"Following crew constraints from yesterday's events, all trains operating between Washington Union Station (WAS) and Boston South Station (BOS) may be impacted due to ongoing and residual issues along the Northeast Corridor," Amtrak warned. "We have canceled select services to minimize delays. This is an ongoing situation; crews are actively working on resolving this issue."

Amtrak said there is "no estimate for the resume of standard operating service" but promised to provide additional details as they become available.

"Customers with reservations on affected trains will typically be accommodated on trains with similar departure times or another day," said Amtrak. "Amtrak will waive additional charges for customers looking to change their reservation during the modified schedule by calling our reservation center at 1-800-USA-RAIL."
