More than a week after being inaugurated by the President of Mexico, Section 5 of the Maya Train connecting Cancun and Playa del Carmen officially debuted last week.

According to Mexico News Daily, over 100 people boarded the first service from the unfinished Playa del Carmen station at 10:30 a.m. local time and arrived at the also unfinished Cancun Airport station at 11:45 a.m.

The two stations remain under construction, but are fully operational for travel. Departures from Cancun occur at 9 a.m., 12 p.m., and 3 p.m., and Playa del Carmen departures leave at 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 4:30 p.m.

As for how much the trips will cost, Quintana Roo residents will pay $6, Mexican nationals will pay $8, and international travelers will pay $11. First-class seats cost $14 for Mexican citizens and $23 for international visitors.

In addition, train tickets include shuttle service to Cancun International Airport terminals.

Last month, a Mexican court ordered construction to halt between Playa del Carmen and Tulum due to concerns about the subsoil, with officials requiring “geological, geophysical and geohydrological studies” to be completed before construction resumes.

Also announced in February, officials representing the Maya Train revealed that state tourism officials would promote it internationally. The tourism secretariats of the five states through which the train passes have discussed promotion.
