The Maya Train, the last portion of which is expected to debut by the end of the month, will likely be promoted internationally by state tourism officials.
According to Riviera Maya News, there are discussions about promotion among the tourism secretariats of the five states through which the tourist train passes.
“It is in a pre-opening stage, the train is starting operations and is testing the route from Cancun to Palenque. Other routes will be added,” explained Bernardo Cueto Riestra, the Secretariat of State Tourism for Quintana Roo, to the news organization. “At the moment there has not been any promotional work but will be during the course of this year. In fact, it was the agreement that the five Secretaries of Tourism of the states that the train travels through will have the work of selling to tour operators.”
As of now, few foreign tourists have been using the Maya Train, called Tren Maya in Spanish, since the launch of its first route between Campeche and Cancun debuted in December 2023.
The state tourism officials want to finalize construction and launch the other routes before beginning international promotion, which will likely focus on rail-friendly Europeans and South Americans, but also have some promotion for North American travelers.
The final routes will connect twelve of the region’s most important archaeological sites as well as popular tourist spots, like Tulum, Cancun (and its busy airport) and Chetumal and its own airport.
