Avalon Waterways named Diana Gabaldon, author of the best-selling "Outlander" novels, as godmother of the Avalon Tapestry II, the company's first Suite Ship in France.
"I've been invited to do everything from leading parades to being installed as a Lady of the Quebec Garrison of the 78th Highlanders - but being godmother to a lovely ship will be a new and fabulous experience," Gabaldon said. "I'm looking forward to new adventures - and doubtless good food - while exploring the history-lined rivers of Europe."
Gabaldon will christen the Suite Ship on March 24 in Les Andelys, France. After the ceremony, the 128-passenger Avalon Tapestry II will carry travelers on itineraries such as "Paris to Normandy's Landing Beaches" and "Grand France."
The "Outlander" books, now the basis for the television series by the same name on Starz, were described by Salon magazine as "the smartest historical sci-fi adventure-romance story ever written by a science Ph.D. with a background in scripting 'Scrooge McDuck' comics."
Gabaldon has written seven "Outlander" books, which were all New York Times-bestselling novels, with 26 million copies in print worldwide, in 40 countries and 36 languages.
Avalon named this class of vessel Suite Ships because they have two full decks of suites. They have a large seating area adjacent to a wall-to-wall panoramic window that opens, essentially turning the suite into an open-air balcony. The Suite Ships also have a club, main lounge, dining room, hair salon, Sky Deck whirlpool and open-air bistro for grilled lunches.
