A passenger on a Carnival Cruise Line ship went missing Sunday and is feared to have gone overboard.
According to AL.com, passengers sailing on the Carnival Fantasy during a five-day western Caribbean cruise were notified Sunday night that a guest had been reported missing. After a thorough search of the ship, officials believe the man went overboard.
The Mobile-based cruise ship departed on December 15 and was on its way to towards its first port of call of Progreso on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. The Carnival Fantasy stopped in Cozumel Monday and is scheduled to arrive back in Mobile on December 20.
It's been a rough several weeks for Carnival, as the cruise line was forced to call off the search for 26-year-old Thomas McElhany Friday after he reportedly went overboard from the Carnival Victory near Islamorada.
"I have been in contact with members of Mr. McElhany's family throughout our search efforts and know this is a very difficult and painful time for them," Coast Guard search and rescue mission coordinator Cmdr. David Aldous said. "Suspending a search is one of the most difficult decisions we have to make as first responders, and it is never made lightly."
Cruise line officials conducted a room-by-room and floor-by-floor sweep of the Carnival Victory before handing the search over to air and water teams, who covered an estimated 2,100 square miles of the ocean over a 32-hour period.
