In the cruise arena, ship upgrades are commonplace.
However, extreme makeovers are another story.
That's the reason for all the buzz about the 3,114-passenger Mariner of the Seas. She's undergoing the biggest refurbishment in Royal Caribbean International's history, to the tune of $100 million dollars.
When she emerges this summer, she'll be a game-changer in the short-cruise market from Miami.
Here's a look at some of her new features.
For one thing, the ship's top deck will look entirely different. Its new star attraction will be a virtual bungee trampoline experience called Sky Pad. Riders will use VR headsets to transport them on an intergalactic, crater-jumping adventure. Those who prefer to stick to the real world can pass up the headsets and take in ocean views as they bounce.
Next to the Sky Pad is The Perfect Storm, a two-slide version of the attraction that debuted on Harmony of the Seas. Guests can race down the twists and turns of the slippery duo, dubbed Cyclone and Typhoon. Transparent panels provide great views, though they go by pretty quickly. Guests can also hang ten (or try to) on a 40-foot version of a fleet favorite, the FlowRider surf simulator.
In Studio B, there's a new glow-in-the-dark laser tag attraction. Guests can team up against each other, grab a laser blaster, and play "Battle for Planet Z."
A new 60-minute escape room experience is called "Puzzle Break: The Observatorium." Guests work together to find hidden clues and solve several high-tech riddles that unlock a mystery.
New culinary options are coming to Mariner of the Seas, as well. They include fresh Tuscan fare served family style at Jamie's Italian by chef Jamie Oliver. The Bamboo Room is a retro Polynesian-themed venue specializing in handcrafted cocktails. Izumi will offer made-to-order sushi and sashimi. And there's a new Starbucks as well.
Of course, the existing ice skating rink, 40-foot rock-climbing wall, nine-hole miniature golf course, three pools, full-sized basketball court and 'Dive-In' outdoor movie nights aren't going anywhere.
The ship will also gain some new staterooms and updates to existing staterooms.
Beginning on June 21, 2018, Mariner of the Seas will sail three and four-night Bahamas cruises from PortMiami to Nassau and Royal Caribbean's private island, CocoCay. The timing coincides with the new docking facilities at CocoCay.
"At Royal Caribbean, we believe in the constant pursuit of adventure, and that every weekend is an opportunity to experience something new, and live life to its fullest," said Michael Bayley, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International. "With the new Mariner of the Seas we invite travelers to weekend like they really mean it and make the most of a quick getaway than they even thought was possible."
