Norwegian Cruise Line has taken delivery of its new 145,655-ton Norwegian Getaway from Meyer Werft in a ceremony in Bremerhaven, Germany. The ship was delivered just nine months after the launch of sister-ship Norwegian Breakaway.
"Norwegian Breakaway revolutionized cruising with its Waterfront and strong connection to New York," said Norwegian CEO Kevin Sheehan. "Norwegian Getaway will do the same as Miami's ultimate ship, offering the only way to cruise the Caribbean from Miami with a plethora of incredible features."
The Getaway then sailed to Rotterdam to begin inaugural festivities, which will continue in Southampton, England, before the ship departs on its trans-Atlantic cruise to New York. The ship will be christened in Miami on Feb. 7.
Norwegian Getaway features hull artwork, including a whimsical mermaid holding the sun above the waves, designed by Miami artist David "LEBO" Le Batard.
The ship has an Illusionarium, which will feature magic and special effects during a dining experience.
Similar to Norwegian Breakaway, the ship has 678 Ocean Place and The Waterfront, interconnected indoor and outdoor venues that include three seafood restaurants by celebrity chef and Food Network star Geoffrey Zakarian and a bakery by Buddy Valastro, star of the TLC series "Cake Boss."
The ship features Nickelodeon experiences, a three-story Sports Complex with a water park, studio staterooms for solo travelers, and luxury suites in The Haven.
