Norwegian Cruise Line is increasing its service charges, effective Aug. 1, to $13.50 per person, per day, for passengers booked in any staterooms up to a mini-suite and $15.50 for those in suites.
The increase comes five months after the daily service charge was increased from $12 to $12.95 for staterooms and mini-suites and $14.95 for suites.
In a letter to travel agents announcing the increase, the Trade Marketing & Engagement Team said the move comes as the line "continues to focus on delivering an outstanding guest experience."
"Norwegian's discretionary daily service charges make it easy for guests to provide gratuities to key onboard staff who provide superior guest service during the cruise, including their room steward, restaurant servers and behind-the-scenes support staff," the letter said. "Guests who are sailing in suite categories also receive the services of a concierge, butler and dedicated wait staff."
Guests who made bookings prior to July 31 can prepay their service charges at the current rate if done before the final payment is made. Guests with existing cruise reservations who have already pre-paid service charges at the current rate will not be affected.
Before this year, Norwegian said it last increased daily service charges in 2009. The cruise line sets a recommended amount, but guests can adjust the service fees up or down to reflect their satisfaction with the service. Some passengers also still choose to tip staff favorites with cash.
