Norwegian Cruise Line has announced that passengers will no longer be able to bring most beverages onboard the company's ships moving forward.
According to the official website of Norwegian Cruise Line, the new beverage policy will be implemented on July 15 and passengers will not be permitted to board with items such as liquor, beer and non-alcoholic drinks such as water, soda and juices.
Norwegian Cruise Line announced that the decision to ban beverages was made as a way to speed up the embarkation process and alleviate pressure on security screeners who were forced to go through all of the beverages during boarding.
The new rules also ban beverages bought by passengers at ports of call. While the cruise line said it would store beverages not bought on the ship in their private storage areas, passengers will not be permitted to have them onboard.
There are exceptions to the rule, as Norwegian Cruise Line will allow passengers to bring sealed bottles of wine onboard, but they will be charged a fee per bottle of $15 or $30, depending on the size of the container. Another exception will be for medically necessary liquids including water for baby formula or milk, but guests must reach out to the cruise line ahead of time.
While Carnival Cruise Line implemented a similar ban on beverages last year, many other cruise companies including Celebrity, Disney, Royal Caribbean and Princess still permit guests to bring beverages onboard.
