The port’s “Cruisin’ Green” initiative will engage tenants, vendors, employees, cruise lines and passengers, and local visitors to implement waste collection and sorting practices across the facility, said officials.

New recycling bins were recently installed at the Port, and cardboard, aluminum cans, glass and paper products will be sorted under the initiative, which aims to reduce waste, promote environmental sustainability and protect marine life, said NCP officials in a statement.

The program will also include elements designed to involve the Nassau community at the redeveloped NCP facility, which opened in 2023 and now features the Bahamas Museum of Junkanoo plus an amphitheater, shops, cafes, restaurants and excursion providers.

A water park is scheduled to open at the facility later this year.

Other recent additions include a new cruise arrivals terminal, new outposts for the Royal Bahamas Police Force and the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, a new ground transportation area to support taxi and tour operations, a hair-braiding pavilion and an event space overlooking the harbor.

“By integrating strategically placed recycling bins, clear signage, comprehensive training and community-driven initiatives, we are fostering a culture of environmental responsibility,” said Yeshantai Thompson, NCP’s health, safety and environment manager.

“Through collaboration with our partners, we aim to engage as many stakeholders as possible in this movement toward a cleaner, more sustainable future,” said Thompson.

“Our mission is to lead by example and inspire the industry to adopt similar green initiatives,” said Mike Maura, NCP’s CEO and director.

Said Maura, “By collaborating with our partners, tenants, and community, we intend to create lasting changes that benefit the environment and future generations of Bahamians for many years.”
