Alaska History Walk Dedicated in Downtown Anchorage

The Alaska History Walk, sponsored by the Atwood Foundation in commemoration of Alaska's 50 years of statehood, was dedicated Oct. 18. The project features 16 bronze plaques, each with a commemorative inscription and historical photo that displays a significant event in Alaska's rich past. The plaques are located between E and F streets along Seventh Avenue and chronicles Alaska's struggle to become a state, including several key events that transformed Alaska, as well as leaders and individuals who impacted or guided the territory's journey to statehood. Each 18-by-18-inch plaque weighs 30 pounds and incorporates contoured, three-dimensional photo-relief images into the design. The Anchorage 50th Anniversary of Statehood Celebration worked with the Alaska Historical Society, the University of Alaska and other Alaska contributors on the project.
