Cupid’s arrow is
increasingly pointing Americans toward foreign shores, new research from a leading
travel insurance and assistance company shows. According to Allianz Partners
USA's ‘Top Valentine's Day Destinations’ report, there's been a notable surge
in demand for overseas travel for the romantic occasion.
In fact, 2024 has
thus far demonstrated a four-percent increase in international trip bookings,
and a substantial 15-percent overall rise in searches for Valentine's Day
travel, compared to last year.
To come up with
these figures, Allianz analyzed more than 900,000 itineraries for roundtrip
flights departing from U.S. airports between February 7 and February 12, with
return dates falling between February 14 and February 18. It also found that
the travel landscape surrounding the sweethearts’ holiday is comprised of 70
percent domestic and 30 percent international itineraries.
The data also
revealed American travelers’ top choices for romantic getaways during this
love-centric celebratory period. Those staying stateside are largely headed for
sunshine locales like Florida’s
Orlando,
Miami
and Fort Lauderdale, which took the top three rankings. Likewise, in the West, Phoenix
and Las
Vegas snagged fourth and fifth, while the sublime city of New Orleans debuted
on the list in sixth place. Rounding out the top domestic rankings are Salt
Lake City (7th), Honolulu
(8th), Fort Myers (9th), and Los
Angeles (10th).

For those
vacationing abroad, Mexico's
sun-drenched coastlines maintain their allure this year, with Cancun,
San
Jose del Cabo, and Puerto
Vallarta securing the top three positions. However, numerous other warm-weather
locations came up hot on their heels. Rounding out the international roster for
romantic retreats this celebratory season are such Caribbean
favorites as Punta
Cana (4th), Oranjestad (5th), Montego Bay (6th), U.S.
Virgin Islands (7th), Liberia (Costa
Rica) (8th), Nassau
(9th) and San Jose (Costa Rica) (10th).
“It’s no surprise that after the holiday season,
couples and ‘galentines’ are ready to leave the cold weather behind and take
flight to palm-fringed beaches,” said Daniel Durazo, Director of External Communications
at Allianz Partners USA. “What better way to celebrate love than with a trip
away from the regular everyday routine. For those who are choosing to get away
this season, we recommend a travel insurance policy to help aid in a seamless
trip, as with a policy in hand, you can rest assured you are protected in case
of unexpected travel delays, cancellations and baggage loss.”
