Americans Can Now Visit China Visa-Free for 10 Days

China is making it easier for Americans to visit.

Officials from the country said this week that China’s visa-free transit policy is being expanded to allow Americans, as well as travelers from more than 50 other countries, to stay for up to 10 days, per NBC.

The loosening of visitation regulations, which in addition to American travelers, includes those from Canada, Europe, Latin America and Asia, is meant to attract more overseas travelers.

The new measure, announced by China’s National Immigration Agency, will be enacted immediately.

Prior to this week’s announcement and change in policy, visitors were only allowed to remain in China without a visa for as long as 72 to 144 hours.

Under the new approach, visitors who have confirmed tickets to leave China in 10 days can enter the country from some 60 different locations spread throughout 24 provinces, according to NBC.

The entry points from which this type of entry is allowed include two of the most popular locations - Beijing and Shanghai.

China has experienced challenges resurrecting its tourism industry in the wake of the COVID-19-era shutdowns.

As part of the country’s efforts to ramp up tourism, passport holders from 38 countries are no longer required to have visas at all and they’re allowed to remain in the country for as long as 30 days for business, tourism, family visits, exchange and transit purposes. Countries on this list  include France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, among others.

Some of these efforts appear to be working. Tourism to China surged during the first part of 2024.
