Looking for an epic bucket-list bike journey?
It's easy to immerse yourself in the journeys of professional riders or those offered by professional companies but what do real people have to say about their epic rides? Readers of the New Zealand Herald were challenged to share their experiences and, if you are looking for inspiration, here is some of what they had to say:
"My favorite cycle route would have to be a loop of the local villages around Hoi An in central Vietnam. I was there in February and although I loved Hoi An, it is very touristy, so hiring bikes and getting out to the local villages, such as Cua Dai, gave me much more of an insight into the everyday life of the Vietnamese," wrote Louise Woolhouse of Rotorua.
Ella Zarifeh of Auckland loved mountain biking in Morocco.
"My favorite cycle route is hands down my trip from Marrakech, Morocco; cycling through the Atlas and Anti-Atlas mountains. Off road mountain biking through canyons, gorges, corn fields and remote villages right to the edge of the Sahara Desert to camp with nomadic Berbers, said Zarifeh.
Alistair Davidson said that cycling across the U.S. was a highlight.
"The American Adventure Cycling Association's TransAmerica Bicycle Trail from Astoria, Oregon to Yorktown, Virginia is right up there on the scale of total epicness, noted Davidson.
Europe is also another popular spot, as noted by Auckland's Sally MacGregor.
"We did a bike-barge trip around North Holland. Our gentle seven speed Dutch bikes aided us over the various levels of flatness. From dairy country to ancient towns, we cycled. Kinderdijk, with its gaggle of windmills was our absolute favorite place," she shared.
