Bahrain to Sink Boeing 747 for Underwater Theme Park Opening in 2019

Scuba divers may want to set their sights on Bahrain, as the country is creating an underwater theme park out of a Boeing 747.

The planned diving site would span 100,000 square meters and center around a 70-meter long decommissioned Boeing 747 specially prepared to go underwater.

Sinking the plane is a sub-aquatic project between the Supreme Council for Environment, Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA), and members of the private sector.

The site would feature everything from artificial coral reefs to art sculptures and a replica of Bahraini pearl merchant’s house.

Organizers say that this attraction will be both eco-friendly and promote marine life growth. The Bahrain Tourism and Exhibition Agency said that the aircraft will be prepared before it’s lowered into the water.

"All aircraft surfaces will be subjected to a high-pressure wash with bio-friendly detergents to ensure all post-production coatings, oil and grime are removed," a spokesperson told CNN Travel.

"Furthermore, a vast amount of time has been spent removing contaminants from the aircraft. This has included removing all wiring, all hydraulic, pneumatic and fuel systems, and all adhesives, insulation, plastics, rubbers, chemicals or other potential toxic substances."

The Boeing 747 diving attraction is set to open by summer 2019, so prepare to book your flights.
