It happens at the
most upscale hotels, it happens at home, and even happens in paradise.
Hawaii has an
apparent bed bug problem.
The nasty little
critters have
been spotted in hotels, emergency services and other public places according to beatofhawaii.com. And the
last thing you want is to have a bug walking across your Cobb Salad while
staring at Waikiki Beach.
For example, a
couple from Japan with small babies recently spent 30 days in Hawaii on
vacation at an upscale Hilton hotel and said they fought bed bugs for 10 of
those days. The family even tried moving room locations, to no avail.
The children
suffered from bites, allergic reaction and fevers. Hotel management said they
hired a pest control company that did not find any bed bugs. But a medical
doctor who examined the children said the bites were consistent with bed bugs.
Hawaii Bed Bug Infestation
In another
example, and proving the point that bed bugs are everywhere, an emergency call
center in Honolulu was temporarily shut down in order to be fumigated. Last
year, a terminal at the airport in Honolulu had to be cleaned and fumigated by
the Department of Transportation to get rid of the bugs.
But the concern is
that they are transported by travelers who have no idea they have the bed bugs
on their person or in their luggage. An infestation of bed bugs could be
devastating to Hawaii, which is so reliance on tourism.
And as we said, it
can happen anywhere -- even
Las Vegas.
