Cozumel Ferry Terminals To Get New X-Ray Machines

Government officials in Mexico announced that two new x-ray machines will be installed inside the ferry terminals at Cozumel next week.

According to the Riviera Maya News, Integral Port Administration of Quintana Roo director Raul Marrufo Gonzalez said the new security detectors will be added to the San Miguel passenger ferry terminal.

The port authority announced it will be in control of the management of the equipment, which can also be found in the airports of Cozumel and Merida, as well as in the cruise terminals throughout the area.

Local company Multiservicios y Asesorias del Caribe SA de CV will be handling monitoring and surveillance of the new security equipment, which was inspected by officials from Royal Caribbean International to ensure safety.

As the new x-ray machines are installed, security staff will be trained with the intent of having them ready to operate the equipment by the end of next week. Raul Marrufo warns travelers that they will need to plan for longer security lines due to the extra layer of protection.

In February, a ferry company which operates sailings between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel was hit with an explosion that left 25 people injured. Explosives were also detected on another vessel in March.
