The Dominican Republic is known for white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters but most people only explore the country from land.
However, the DR is well-known for its spectacular scuba diving tourism, offering unparalleled experiences to those who would like to explore its depths. Divers will find colorful coral reefs, historic shipwrecks and the water teeming with sea life.
The warm waters are home to a diverse underwater landscape with a variety of marine life including tropical fish, sea turtles, rays, and sharks. In addition, there is the La Caleta National Underwater Park in Santo Domingo where there are opportunities to dive into a vibrant and colorful underwater ecosystem, while shipwrecks like the famous "Atlantis" in Bayahibe offer an exciting experience for the most adventurous divers.
Montecristi Underwater National Park is another place to explore below the sea. It boasts a rich coral barrier that stretches from the western edge of El Morro to Punta Rucia, covering more than 96 square miles. It is one of the most untouched reefs in the country and one of the least visited.

The Canyon, located in Sosúa Bay, is ideal for divers of all levels. Beginners can enjoy the shallower area that is just 40 feet deep, swimming along the walls and observing marine life, including moray eels, lobsters, and huge crabs.
While diving in the Dominican Republic is a year-round activity, peak season is between June and September when the water is calm and there is good visibility. Year-round water temperatures range between 75 and 84 degrees, allowing for diving even in the middle of the winter when temperatures hover around 77 degrees.
In addition to coral reefs and marine life, the Dominican Republic also offers the chance to explore underwater geological formations like caves and caverns. Padre Nuestro Cave is located off of the Samaná Peninsula and is a place where divers can explore this unique topography.
